Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State on Thursday has directed the immediate completion of Minna Orphanage Home, 30 years after it was abandoned. He gave Ministry for Gender Affairs four months to ensure the completion of the home.
The Governor gave the directive after he paid an unscheduled visit to the home at Bosso Estate, a suburb of Minna, the state capital. He expressed displeasure with the level of structural decay and absence of social amenities in the home. Describing the existing facility as unacceptable for human habitation, the governor decried the neglect the facility has suffered over the years.
"The condition of the Orphanage is unacceptable and we can not allow a facility like this to rot away. Ministry for Gender Affairs should ensure the completion of the home within four months," Governor Bello directed.
The Commissioner for Gender Affairs, Hajiya Ramatu Yar'adua was also directed to liaise with her counterpart in the Ministry of Water Resources to provide portable drinkable water to the Orphanage home.
Work on the Orphanage began in began in 1986 and was subsequently neglected by successive administrations.
