Close South Africa Embassy, Youth tells Ag President

The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo was told on Tuesday to close South African embassies in the country and declare the High Commissioner and other officials "personae non grata" until safety of Nigerians is guaranteed.

This was the demand of some Youths who protested against xenophobic attacks in South Africa at the South African embassy in Lagos

There was a mild drama at the embassy when the youths under the aegis of Advocates for Collective Transformation and Youth Empowerment Initiative (ACT) staged the protest.

No fewer than 15 people participated in the protest with only seven of them wearing the group's t-shirt.

Asked about the scanty nature of the protest, the Media Coordinator of the group, Ayodele Samuel said some of their members mistakenly went to the South African visa office instead of the High Commission.

Nonetheless,he said the group with over 2000 members spread across campuses in the country are unhappy with the xenophobic attacks in South Africa with Nigerian businesses and nationals seriously affected.

General Secretary of the group, Comrade Ifetoluwa Ajayi said the Federal Government must take the drastic decisions of shutting down the South African embassies and blacklisting their officials to protest the attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

He said the group is not interested in attacking any South African business or in retaliation but to pass a message to the South African Government and the citizens to reciprocate the peaceful climate enjoyed in Nigeria by various South African businesses.

Going by the volume of revenue generated by South African businesses in Nigeria, the citizens must treat Nigerian nationals in South Africa with utmost dignity and respect, he said.

"We don't want South African ambassador and other officials on our shores until the safety of Nigerians is guaranteed", he said.
